Screening Tool for Arabic Reading Difficulties
A computerized screening tool for Arabic reading and spelling difficulties. The tool allows easy and fast detection of reading, word recognition and spelling difficulties among native Arab children in grades 1 to 6.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of the SARD study is to pilot the tool to ensure its validity and reliability and to collect initial early reading benchmarks.
Confidentiality of Records
Any information about the students will be kept as confidential (private. A Study identification (ID) number will be used on any research records (Students’ names will not be on these records). Data obtained will strictly be used for educational and research purposes.
Research Confidentiality
Access to the students’ identifying information will be limited to the researchers who developed the Reading Assessment tool (Hanada Taha, Haitham Taha). The records will not contain any personal identifiers. Students will not be identified by name in any publication of the research results.
Risks
There are no perceived risks to participation, except possibly for some fatigue as the test might take up to 1.5 hours. However, we have mitigated that by allowing students to stop at any point in the test and continuing at a later time.
Termination or Withdrawal
Students can stop at any point in the test and withdraw from participation without any penalties.
Rewards
Schools will receive a detailed report on each participating student depicting their performance on each of the early reading tasks in SARD.
